I am a 50 yr. young male and have been suffering from vasovagal syncope for 3 yrs. Triggers include coughing, sneezing, laughing, deep breaths, smoke, perfumed, and airway irritants. I also have asthma, which makes my airway particularly sensitive. Stress seems to increase syncopal episode frequency. Syncopal episodes have been as often as >2 doz./day, and as little as an average of 4/mo. over a years time. The many Drs. I have seen say that there is no treatment and I will likely suffer from this condition for the rest of my life. I also suffer from severe depression and anxiety. Does anyone have practical suggestions (other than wheelchair, helmet and pads) for minimizing injuries? Has anyone had problems with finding or keeping a job? Does anyone have experience with private and/or Social Security disability claims? Are there any support groups? Please help me! I'm almost at the end of my rope. ngare@preferred.com
