I am caring for a 94 year old woamn that suddenly started to have sizures. Most often, but not always, occured while having a BM although she was not straining a great deal. She would get wozzy, lose all color in her face, blood pressure dropped, the urge to vomit and usually did, stares into sapce and then loses consiousness for approximately 45 to 90 seconds. When she comes to is totally unaware of any incident. Of the 8 or 10 that she has had in the past year I took her to the ER on at least 5 times. She was diagnosed with having a vasil-vagal attack. Her MD agrees with this opinion. They have told me not to worry and it is not necessary to keep bringing her in to be checked. One thing I have observed is that if I keep her laying flat they seem to disappear. No one has explained what this nerve does or why she suddenly started with these episodes. I am trying to serch the web for more information. is this okay? Is there a medication fo control this disorder, what are they doing to her health? Is it old age? She has poor lungs, is this related? Can anyone add some insight?

I WAS HAPPY TO SEE SOMEONE 59 YRS OLD THAT HAS HAD A SIMILIAR EXPERIENCE AS MINE. I AM A REG. NS., 65 Y O THAT HAD A SIMILIAR EXPERIENCE 3 YRS AGO AND THEN ANOTHER LAST WEEK WHEN I HAD DIZZINESS, ABD. PAIN WITH AN EXTREME URGE TO GET TO THE BATHROOM. MY SON HAPPENED TO BE HOME AND KEPT ME FROM FALLING BUT I TOTALLY PASSED OUT WITH NO REMEMBERENCE OF THE FAINTING INCIDENT AFTER I REGAINED CONSCIENCENESS. I LOST CONTROL OF MY BLADDER AND BOWEL, VERY HUMILIATING, AND A RIDE TO THE E R IN AN AMBULANCE!! DX: GASTRO-ENTERITIS.. MY PRIMARY DR, SAID IT WAS PROBABLY A VASO-VAGAL RESPONSE TO THE ABDOMINAL PAIN. ALTHOUGH A NURSE, I DON'T REMEMBER STUDING ABOUT OR WORKING WITH THIS PARTICULAR SYNDROME. NOW I AM AFRAID TO BE ALONE. I NEVER FAINTED IN MY LIFE UNTIL LAST WEEK. MOST RESPONSES I READ AT THIS SITE WAS FROM LIFE LONG PROBLEM. ANY OTHER SENIORS WITH A RECENT DX?

On Sabbatical!

When my office lease expired at the end of 2004, I decided to turn it into a "sabbatical" from my private practice. Many years ago, in my grandfather's 89th year of life, he told me, "John, it is important to smell the roses while you can still smell them." His life gave living a very good reputation. It is also true that the pursuit of that philosophy required my grandfather to to re-open his assay office/ore market in Wickenburg, Arizona as a 75-year-old because he had run a little short of retirement money. Thus, if blessed with his luck and health, I'll be back.. --jjh
