On September 17 at 2 a.m. I awoke with what I thought was a pulled muscle at the base of my neck/top of my left shoulder. I blamed a poor sleeping position, rolled over and went back to sleep. At 4:15 a.m., I awoke again with the severe shoulder pain and got up to take a few Nuprin. In my bathroom, I became so nauseated and near passing out that I lay down on the floor. I heard my daughter get up and ask my husband what was happening with me . Not wanting her to find me laying there, I used all the strength I had to walk down to my kitchen. Standing in front of the sink, I knew I was about to pass out and possibly vomit. I attempted to lower myself to the floor. Then next thing I knew, my husband was on the phone with the paramedics. I wanted to talk but had absolutely no strength. I could barely breathe and was hyperventilating. I could not move my head or sit up, as I knew I would vomit and pass out again. The same area of my neck/shoulder was in excruciating pain. I was sweating like I have never sweat before-my nightshirt was literally wet. My husband guesses that I was "out" for 1-2 minutes. While passed out, my hands were in clenched fists next to my ears and my head rolled back, my eyes rolled back in their sockets and I was moaning loudly. My legs also became rigid. In the ambulance, I vomited violently for about a minute. At the emergency room, I still felt I could not sit up or I would vomit and/or pass out again. I had blood tests, reflex tests, a chest x-ray and around 9 a.m. an electroencephalogram. According the the eeg, I did not have a seizure. But my husband swears that I did. My other tests were all normal.

What happened to my was the scariest thing I have been through in my 36 years. I genuinely believed that I was going to die. I am hoping that it never happens again.

Thanks for your interest in hearing my story.

After a tilt test-I've recently been diagnosed with malignant vaso vagel syncope.I don't seem to have the usuel symptoms like sweating, stomach ache, and bowel movements..I just get this wierd "Out of Body"experience..thats the only way I can describe it..any one else get the same? I've been given beta blockers, but, after consultation with a homeopath have decided to try opium tablets first After 10 days, then seem to have a calming effect.I had a slight attack getting out of bed , but the feeling passed in 10 seconds.Has anyone else tried this treatment? I also had an eeg test. My consultant called me to say it showed up "irregularities"..he wants me to have a brain scan-Can this be linked to vasovagel syncope- any one else had this? email me Stan

VASO-VAGAL ATTACK

From:

Comments

I HAVE BEEN GOING THRU EPIDURAL PAIN SHOTS IN MY BACK. THE LAST 3 SHOTS I HAVE EXPERENCE WHAT I WOULD CALL A VASO-VAGAL ATTACK. I WOULD IMMEDIATLY WHEN THE MEDICATION GOES INTO MY BACK, I FEEL NAUSEAED, I BEGIN TO SWEAT PROFUSLY, I CAN TELL THEM I AM GOING TO PASS OUT. THIS LAST TIME THEY PUT ME ON A MONITOR AND DURING THIS EPISODE MY PULSE DROPPED TO 34, MY BP WENT TO 90/55, WHICH HAD BEEN 147/98. MY DOCTOR ACTS LIKE THERE IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT, BUT I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE ANOTHER PAIN SHOT, EACH TIME THE EPISODE IS WORSE AND IS HARDER TO RECOVER FROM. ANYONE OUT THERE THAT HAS EXPERENCED ANY OF THE SAME PROBLEMS, OR HAD THIS HAPPEN TO THEM. HOW DANGEROUS IS THIS?

On Sabbatical!

When my office lease expired at the end of 2004, I decided to turn it into a "sabbatical" from my private practice. Many years ago, in my grandfather's 89th year of life, he told me, "John, it is important to smell the roses while you can still smell them." His life gave living a very good reputation. It is also true that the pursuit of that philosophy required my grandfather to to re-open his assay office/ore market in Wickenburg, Arizona as a 75-year-old because he had run a little short of retirement money. Thus, if blessed with his luck and health, I'll be back.. --jjh
