Subject: Federal Legislation to Authorize Sale of Medical Records
Date: 28 Jul 1998 00:58:57 GMT
The Washington Post ran an article on July 24, 1998 about the new
Republican sponsored health care legislation, called the Patient
Protection Act of 1998, which was scheduled to be debated on the House
floor today.
The article indicated that there is a provision in the bill that would
authorize the transfer and sale of medical records data by and to
private vendors.
The Post article indicates that representatives of the health care
industry, apparently led by a group referred to as the Healthcare
Leadership Council, consider such transfers and sales to be a good
trade off for providing high quality health care services.
For those who may be interested in voicing their views to their
Congressmen or Senators, the remainder of the legislative session is very
short due to the August recess and the November elections, so this bill
will move very fast.
