Vasal depressor syncope (sp?)

I experienced several episodes over a period of 2 years with the last being 6 years ago . . . until last night. I break out in a sweat, feel nauseous, and dizzy and within seconds, pass out. I have been sitting each time it has occured and the onset is very fast. Six years ago, I went through a variety of tests and the cardiologist's findings were 'vasal depressor syncope.' He told me it was not dangerous to me or to my heart - I find the episodes very frightening and fear they will occur when noone is around and that I will slip into unconsciousness and not wake up. I would like to replace my 'fear' with knowledge and I would like to know what brings these on. Each time these have occured, people around me have assumed it was a drop in blood sugar and have given me orange juice, candy, or glucose - with these and fluids and lying flat for awhile, I have recovered. My pulse has been weak and the bottom number of my blood pressure has been low. The cardiologist prescribed 'effexor' (sp) - I took it for awhile and then suspended use, as the incidents ceased. It happened again last night and I am seeking a reason as to why this occurs. Any insight would be appreciated.
