I have experienced the same thing - waking in the night with a charlie horse and immediately feeling like I was going to pass-out. I've struggled for years with vaso-vagal in many situations, but for these night episodes I have learned that taking long deep breaths (the "in through through the nose, out through the mouth" routine) during the attack, followed by drink of water has helped and kept me from passing out.
