VV from exercise

My husband is in hospital now because of a VV attack. This is the second attack in 7 weeks and both occurred at the health club where we were exercising. We are both in our 70's and our exercise consists of mostly aerobic machines and some free weights. My husband uses free weights (8 lbs) to exercise a torn rotator cuff. It is after the free weights that he has these episodes that send him into a VV attack. The Drs are telling us that there is nothing to do about these attacks except to learn the symptoms and react to them by immediately lying down and allowing the blood to run to the brain. He becomes extremely disoriented and has slurred speach. This whole thing is very frustrating!!
