New VVS member, needle-injury type

Wow. I feel a bit liberated today. I am 99% sure that I have VVS (now to try to get doctors to agree).

Ever since my MMR booster shot at age 12, I have passed out when subjected to shots, drawing blood, and bad injuries where the skin gets cut. On occasion, if a doc says that I may need to undergo an extensive procedure, I tend to start shocking out as well.

It probably does not help that my normal pulse and blood pressure tends to run low (resting pulse of 58-62, heart monitor says as low as 38 when sleeping!). This is a genetic train from my moms side of the familiy, and it probably does not help.

I am now 34, and I have suffered through medical procedures by relying on Valium to chill me out before procedures. I had to start out with about 70mg before being calm enough to have the work done, now I get by with 20mg. After reading up on VVS, I will need to start adding a bit more salt to my diet before procedures. I was drinking loads of water, which seems to help.

My big worry now is what is going to happen when I get older and will have to have medical work done. I am really afraid that a sickness is not going to kill, the VVS reaction to the treatment will.

Has anyone had any success with non-medication treatments to avoid VVS episodes? (like hypnosis?)

Thanks a bunch.
