From: Rich
I am 36 and have had periodic vagal responses. Not specifically to any category of items such as blood or needles. I had a very nice doctor explain to me that it is not something that I can consciously control. It is an involuntary response. What I do before any exam is to tell the doctor or nurse or technician that I am prone to get vagal responses. I tell them so that they don't panic and think I am going into shock. I can sense that one is coming on because I start feeling very hot, others can tell I am turning pale, my hearing gets muffled and my vision starts to narrow. I immediately lay down and ask for a cold wash rag. Technicians have tried to take my blood pressure during one of the responses only to find I don't hardly have any blood pressure. That is when they start to freak-out.
